Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me …” The Lord replied, “What is that in your hand?” (Exodus 2:1-2 NIV).
Moses resisted God’s call on his life. God clarified that calling. In Exodus 2:8, He said, “ I have come down to rescue them…” In 2:10, He said, “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.”
When God calls us to something, we don’t get to sit in the bleachers and watch Him do that thing. In the 14thchapter of Exodus, as the multitude approached the Red Sea with the furious Egyptians closing fast behind, it seems Moses had become more confident in his speaking. So he decided it was time for a pep talk (verses 13-14), “…Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
God responded (vs. 15-16), “…Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. Raise your staff (that same staff God was talking about in 2:2) and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water…”
Centuries later, when God told Jehoshaphat He would fight for them (2 Chronicles 20:17), the theme of Jehoshaphat doing something was evident in those verses. First, God said, “You will not have to fight this battle.” But, He followed with, “…Take up your positions; stand firm…” Then He said, “…see the deliverance the LORD will give you…” Then, “…Go out to face them tomorrow...”
Moses’s staff was extraordinary, but Aaron’s staff made it into the Ark of the Covenant. Joshua’s army conquered with song 500 years before Jehoshaphat’s army.
Think About it
We understand the concept of action on our part to carry out God’s will. That’s why we do what we do. However, we tend to focus on what we don’t have (budget, leadership support, training participation, etc.), or on limitations (resistance to procedures, stifling of actions, criticism, etc.) placed on us.
This week, (this coming year), be thankful for what you have in your hand – even if it’s just a stick or a song.
You will go further with gratitude than you will with an attitude.
