My wife and I were sitting under our porch a few days ago, looking out over our farm. She has a Koi pond in our front yard, with fish, rock walls and a waterfall. Being right by our porch, it is a favorite place for us to sit in the mornings and evenings. That evening she said, “I see a man’s face in one of those rocks – with eyes, cheeks and a mouth.”
I looked up and my eyes went straight to it. It had been there a long time, but we both saw it for the first time right then.
I thought of the first time I had tactical handgun training, the instructor asked me what type of grip I used.
“Grip? I hold it with both hands.”
He asked me to hold it (a Springfield XD) up and point downrange just like I normally would. As soon as I did, he said “you started off shooting revolvers, didn’t you?”
Of course. I grew up in farm country. The first pistol I ever bought new was a Ruger single-six .22. My first large caliber pistol was a Ruger Blackhawk, .357 magnum. I shot thousands of rounds through each of them.
How did he know that?
He said, “you use a cup & saucer grip.” As soon as he said it, I saw it in my grip. It made perfect sense, but it was wrong for a tactical handgun.
Good trainers show you things so clear you wonder how you never saw it.
Think About it
We don’t know what we don’t know and can’t see what we can’t see.
I recall the joys of helping our first Granddaughter see things in nature. One evening I was trying to help her see the man in the moon. She was about 4 years old, and it just wasn’t connecting. She couldn’t see him.
As we stood in our Colorado driveway looking up at the rising moon, I didn’t know what else I could say to help her see it. Suddenly she yelled, cried and grabbed my leg. “I see him Grandpa! I see him and I don’t like him!”
Come to our big summit event this year. You will see things you never saw before. You might not even like them, but you need to know.
