Recently a man walked into the FBSN office from the street.
I stepped into the lobby to ask if I could help him. As most who stall in the lobby seeing the displays, he wanted to know, “what is the Faith Based Security Network?”
I told him how we are a professional membership and networking association for those who perform security functions for their churches or ministries across the U.S.
His response was, “Oh yeah! I have my conceal carry permit and I’m packing and ready every Sunday.” I told him that’s not really security. To be trained and equipped for significant attacks is part of it, but there is so much more that real security is.
He looked at me like a calf looks at a horse for the first time. He had no idea what to say, so I asked if he was part of his church’s security team. He answered they don’t have any such thing but he is the one ready to protect them (going back to his sidearm).
I told him he should talk to his pastor about the need. I considered giving him one of my books; but instead asked him where he attended church. When he told me, I informed him they do in fact have a security program and told him my friend’s name who is the security director there. “Oh!” He said, “maybe I should just look him up.” I told him that would be a good first step.
Then the man spewed his loathing for law-enforcement. He claimed that when a tornado destroyed his home, law-enforcement wouldn’t let him back in and then they stole his knife collection and other valuables.
I told him I did not believe that happened. Again, came that clueless calf look. Liars can't face truth.
Think About it
Your ministry has people like him in your attendance. They are probably going to be one of the first out of your building if anything dangerous happens. But if they do inject themselves into the action, you will need to deal with them as well as the dragon.
Then they will get on news and blogs telling how they were the real hero and what all you did wrong.
What is your plan for that?
It is an honor to work with so many real professionals in the FBSN!
